Ah! I'm pretty sure that Shogidokoro won't work. ShogiGUI should work on Android systems I think, but as I don't have one, I've never tried it. From memory, the interface on Android is Japanese. You need to wait till the laptop comes back from the fettler. Good luck!

The HM at present is female and quite placid by all accounts

My pleasure - all part of the service...

I should have said, Shogidokoro is Windoze-only, as far as I know...

Nice! I know Oban well - used to be the start point for many cruising jaunts along the West Coast and out to the Western Isles. The harbour-master used to have a reputation among yachtsmen as the grumpiest man on the West Coast (I'm talking about 30-odd years ago now, I'm sure the present incumbent is lovely...).

1) Buy a book. I would recommend 'Shogi for Beginners' by John Fairbairn, or 'The Art of Shogi' by Tony Hosking.

Supplier for SfB: Mrs. A. Hodges (GeorgeHodges@talk21.com)
Supplier for TAoS: http://www.shogifoundation.co.uk/

Both in the U.K.

2) Install a stand-alone Shogi program. I would recommend 'Shogidokoro' or 'ShogiGUI'

Shogidokoro (review): https://www.techsupportalert.com/content/shogidokoro.htm-0
Shogidokoro (download): http://shogidokoro.starfree.jp/download.html
Shogidokoro (information about add-on 'engines'): http://www2.teu.ac.jp/gamelab/SHOGI/SPEAR/spearmain.html
ShogiGUI (download): http://shogigui.siganus.com/
ShogiGUI (introduction): https://www.dropbox.com/s/wa40stjsd37x0eg/Introduction%20to%20ShogiGUI.pdf?dl=0

3) When you come to buy a Shogi set, buy a set with proper pieces, not 'westernised' ones. The set on sale here ('hybrid' pieces) is good (Czech Republic - I don't know if they are shipping abroad at the moment):

https://www.shogi.cz/en/

There is also a set of templates allowing you to make a paper-and-card set before taking the plunge and buying a set:

A modest free 'Introduction to Shogi' here:

Where are you? I lived in Edinburgh for 32 years. Happy days...
